Secura Key Plug-in Wireless Network Module

Secura Key is introducing a wireless network module which allows the companys SK-ACP 2-door access control panel to easily connect to a Local Area Network to monitor and control an access control system. This module replaces expensive outboard network adapters, eliminating the requirement for an additional enclosure, cabling and a power supply. The key advantage of the wireless module is that it enables network access in locations where there is no preexisting Ethernet cable, thus providing solutions for challenging installations.

The compact SK-WLS MOD for 802.11b/g plugs directly into the SK-ACP panel (Revision N or later) and receives its power from the panel. To enable access to a local network, the module integrates a fully developed TCP/IP network stack and operating system. The module can be configured remotely over the network. The wireless module can be located using the software provided with any 802.11b/g wireless router. The module uses the Transmission Control Protocol to assure that no data is lost or duplicated and that everything sent arrives correctly at the target.

The wireless module uses the widely accepted 802.11g protocol to connect to the wireless infrastructure, and is it fully compatible with 802.11b wireless networks. The module includes power and status LEDs, and an antenna, which is mounted on the access control panel enclosure.

Schlage Protects Access Control Investment with Future Upgrade Capabilities

A new series of Schlage electronic locks could have the potential for locksmiths to install todays electronic locks and upgrade in the future without taking the lock off the door. The new AD-Series is set to ship in December.

According to Schlage, the new AD-Series electronic locks provide options to customize the access control solution, quickly migrate to future needs and provide seamless integration, now and later, at a lower cost of ownership. Upgrades can be as simple as interchanging a module, said Karen Keating, Schlage electronic locking portfolio marketing manager.

"This ground-breaking series of electronic locks means that purchasers will be able to buy a customized solution to secure their facilities today while protecting their access control investment for years to come," Keating said. "The modular, open architecture AD-Series lets users customize door openings with options such as credential reader type, networking, finish and levers. Yet, as their business needs change, so can their access control solution to new credential technologies, a variety of network protocols, increased security levels and system expansions."

With the AD-Series, components that have been traditionally located around the door are integrated into the lock itself, giving the ability to create a custom fit right at the lock. For instance, the locks provide multiple, interchangeable credential reader modules as well as interchangeable offline, wired and wireless networking modules so that access control can be installed at doors where it had been previously unfeasible. The new AD-Series electronic locks are compatible with all popular exit devices, provide a host of power and cylinder options, offer field configurable settings and include a wide variety of finishes and levers.

"Security needs change over time as does technology," Keating said. "With the AD-Series, users are deploying an adaptable security solution today while being ready for whatever the future holds."

The patent-pending modular design of the new Schlage AD-Series lets users adapt to new technologies easily, whether changing credential technologies or networking capabilities. Without replacing the lock, or even taking it off the door, users can upgrade readers and network modules to go from an offline to networked solution, change the credentials they are using at any time and use future innovative technologies as they emerge. With its open architecture platform, the AD-Series integrates with Schlage or third party software and is able to leverage existing network infrastructure.

"Before the new Schlage AD-Series, many users often held off on implementing a new security platform because they were worried that it would be obsolete within a few years," observes Keating. "The features that make the AD-Series flexible and adaptable also make them scalable, protecting a user's investment for years to come."

With the AD-Series, there is no need to outfit the entire facility at once. Users can start small and add more openings as budgets permit. They can also choose which openings should be offline or networked, managing both types of locks with the same software and database. As a result, a facility can have more locks on more doors to increase security, move more offline doors to a network solution as budget and needs dictate.

Kaba Access Offers PlaSec Integration

Kaba Access Control is now a reseller through its distributors of PlaSecs Linux-based PL-500 series access control platform. The product will integrate into Kabas Card-Connected E-Plex 5900 Series door locks and controllers. Used together, the PL-500 series and E-Plex 5900 series provide simple and scalable access control from one to thousands of doors using ISO 14443A Smart Cards so that offline and online (wired) access points can be managed from the same platform. This solution is browser-based, and, therefore, software does not have to be installed on a PC. Adding integrated access points is as simple as installing a lock without the expense of running wires or wireless infrastructure across the facility. If desired, the PlaSec Collaborative Platform can be configured to interoperate with identity management, network access control, event management and network monitoring systems. Both PlaSec and Kaba utilize CoreStreets Card-Connected technology to integrate offline and online (wired) access points.

ALOA Board of Directors Adopt Code of Ethics Changes and False Advertising Policy to Address the Issue of Scammers

Dallas, TX April 28, 2009 In a bold move, the Associated Locksmiths of America, Inc. (ALOA), revised its Code of Ethics to address the issue of deceptive advertising.

The ALOA Board added language to the Code of Ethics that directs all members to, advertise and conduct business in a non-deceptive manner. To further explain this position, the Board adopted the following policy:

ALOA members are considered by the public as Locksmiths You Can Trust. They are bound by the Associations Code of Ethics to, advertise and conduct business in a non-deceptive manner.

Therefore, the listing of an address in any print or electronic medium, whether it be an advertisement, directory listing, business card or otherwise holding oneself out to the public as conducting business from that address, when in fact you do not conduct your business from that address, is considered deceptive and therefore a violation of the Code of Ethics. Such practice may subject the ALOA member to a review of their membership by the Board of Directors.

"Scammers entice consumers who need emergency locksmith services with telephone directory and internet ads that give the impression you are calling a local business," says ALOA's Executive Director, David Lowell, CAE, CML., "These companies manipulate listings with multiple false addresses and phone numbers to make them seem like a neighborhood business. In actuality, the victims frequently are calling out-of state operations that are not locksmith companies at all. This change to the Code of Ethics and added policy statement will ensure that our members are not participating in this deception. Violation of the Code of Ethics and this policy will require that their continued membership in the organization be reviewed by the Board of Directors."

The Associated Locksmiths of America, Inc. (ALOA) is the world's largest organization for locksmiths and other physical security professionals. ALOA is dedicated to being the consumer's first line of defense in physical security by increasing the effectiveness and productivity of locksmiths through educational programs and materials that address broad security interests. ALOA's activities include the ALOA Continuing Education (ACE) program, the ALOA Annual Convention & Security Expo and the ALOA Training Center, which is based in Dallas, Texas. ALOA leads the way for advanced and improved security performance by providing members and the security community with access to a full range of educational programs and services.
